Narratives
are everywhere. According to Kuttainen, V, (2015), “Narrative is important in
regards to how we organise our space.” It has a great effect on how we see
things around us. There are multiple different forms of narratives that we are
essentially surrounded by each day. Ontology is an additional concept which is
relevant to narratives. It is essentially our perspective of the world. You can
read more about ontology here. The key concept of narrative will be linked to
FaceBook.
The
social networking website, FaceBook, provides it’s users with the opportunity
to upload photos, statuses, and to share links or other posts. These major aspects
of FaceBook can be considered as forms of narratives. The opportunity to post a
status for friends to see essentially provides the opportunity to upload a
narrative. Posting a status or a photo is telling a story. According to
Kuttainen, V, (2015), “Narratives can be exchanged.” On a FaceBook user’s post,
depending on the user’s privacy settings, it can be commented on by other
users. This is an example of exchanging narratives on FaceBook.
The
way in which FaceBook users present their narratives have the potential to set
the mood of their ‘stories’. Basically, the language which is used in the
narratives have power. According to Tuan, Y, (1991), “… warm conversation
between friends can make the place itself seem warm; by contrast, malicious
speech has the power to destroy a place’s reputation and thereby its
visibility.” FaceBook users have the power to do this.
Overall,
it can clearly be seen how the concept of narratives and the specific concept
of ontology, can be linked to the social networking website, FaceBook.
